	Much, that once was is lost. For none now live who remember it. It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves: Immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarflords: Great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and will to govern each race. But they were all of them deceived. For another ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a Master Ring to control all others. And into this Ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One Ring to rule them all. One by one the free lands of Middle-earth fell to the power of the Ring. But there were some who resisted. A last Alliance of Men and Elves marched against the armies of Mordor. And on the slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle-earth. In diesen Ring floss seine Grausamkeit, seine Bosheit und sein Wille, alles Leben zu unterdrücken. Ein Ring, sie zu knechten. Der Reihe nach gerieten die freien Länder Mittelerdes unter die Herrschaft des Ringes. Doch einige leisteten Widerstand. Ein letztes Bündnis von Elben und Menschen zog in die Schlacht gegen Mordor du kämpfte an den Hängen des Schicksalsberges um die Freiheit Mittelerdes.

Galadriel (VO)	Victory was near. But the power of the Ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword. Sauron, the enemy of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth, was defeated. The Ring passed to Isildur who had this one chance to destroy evil forever. But the hearts of Men are easily corrupted. And the Ring of Power has a will of its own. It betrayed Isildur to his death. And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend, legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years the Ring passed out of all knowledge. Until, when chance came, it ensnared a new bearer. Und zweieinhalbtausend Jahre lang geriet der Ring in Vergessenheit. Bis er sich eines Tages einen neuen Träger suchte.
Gollum	My precious.	Mein Schatz.
Galadriel (VO)	The Ring came to the creature Gollum, who took it deep into the tunnels of the Misty Mountains. And there it consumed him	Der Ring geriet dem Geschöpf Gollum in die Hände, der ihn tief hinein in das Nebelgebirges trug und dort verfiel er dem Ring.
Gollum	It came to me. My own. My love. My own. My precious.	Er ist zu mir gekommen. Mein Eigen. Mein Liebstes. Mein Eigen. Mein Schatz.
Galadriel (VO)	The Ring brought to Gollum unnatural long life. For 500 years it poisoned his mind. And in the gloom of Gollum’s cave it waited. Darkness crept back into the forests of the world. Rumour grew of a shadow in the East, whispers of a nameless fear. And the Ring of Power perceived: it’s time had now come. It abandoned Gollum. But something happened then, the Ring did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable.	Der Ring verlieh Gollum ein unnatürlich langes Leben. 500 Jahre vergiftete er dessen Verstand. Bilbo	The 22^nd day of September in the year 1400, by Shirereckoning. Bag End, Bagshot Row, Hobbiton, Westfarthing, the Shire, Middle-earth. The Third Age of this world. There and Back Again: A Hobbit's Tale. By Bilbo Baggins. Now, where to begin? Ah, yes, “Concerning Hobbits.” Hobbits have been living and farming in the four Farthings of the Shire for many hundreds of years, quite content to ignore and be ignored by the world of the Big Folk. Middle-earth being, after all, full of strange creatures beyond count, Hobbits must seem of little importance, being neither renowned as great warriors, nor counted among the very wise. Frodo! Someone at the door! In fact, it has been remarked by some, that Hobbits' only real passion is for food. A rather unfair observation, as we have also developed a keen interest in the brewing of ales, and the smoking of pipe weed. But where our hearts truly lie is in peace and quiet and good, tilled earth. For all Hobbits share a love of things that grow. And, yes, no doubt to others, our ways seem quaint. But today of all days, it is brought home to me: It is no bad thing to celebrate a simple life. Frodo, the door! Sticklebacks! Where is that boy? Frodo!	Am 22. Tage des Septembers im Jahre 1400, nach Auenland-Zeitrechnung. Beutelsend, Beutelhaldenweg, Hobbingen, Westviertel, Auenland, Mittelerde. Das 3. Zeitalter dieser Welt. „Hin und wieder zurück: Die Geschichte eines Hobbits. Von Bilbo Beutlin.“ Tja, wo fange ich an? Ah, ja, „Über Hobbits.“ Die Hobbits bewohnen und bewirtschaften die vier Viertel des Auenlandes seit vielen Jahrhunderten. Durchaus zufrieden damit, die Welt des großen Volks zu meiden und von ihr gemieden zu werden. Und da es in Mittelerde von unzähligen seltsamen Geschöpfen wimmelt, erscheinen die Hobbits wohl sehr wenig wichtig, denn sie sind weder als große Krieger bekannt, noch zählen sie zu den besonders Weisen. Ha ha ha. Frodo! Da ist jemand an der Tür. Übrigens, einige sind der Meinung, dass die einzige Leidenschaft der Hobbits dem Essen gilt. Eine ziemlich ungerechte Bemerkung, da wir ebenfalls ein großes Interesse für das Bierbrauen entwickelt haben und gerne Pfeifenkraut rauchen. Doch was uns wirklich am Herzen liegt, ist Frieden und Stille und ein gut bestellter Boden. Denn nichts lieben Hobbits mehr, als Dinge, die wachsen. Natürlich mag einigen unsere Lebensweise verschroben vorkommen, aber gerade am heutigen Tag wird mir bewusst: Es ist nicht das schlechteste, sich am einfachen Leben zu erfreuen. Frodo, die Tür! Herrjemine, wo steckt der Junge? Frodo!

CHAPTER 1/03
(near Hobbiton)

Frodo	You're late.	Du kommst recht spät.
Gandalf	A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.	Ein Zauberer kommt nie zu spät, Frodo Beutlin. Ebenso wenig zu früh. Er trifft genau dann ein, wenn er es beabsichtigt.
Frodo	It's wonderful to see you, Gandalf!	Was für eine Freude, dich zu sehen, Gandalf!
Gandalf	You didn’t think I’d miss your Uncle Bilbo’s birthday? So how is the old rascal? I hear it’s going to be a party of special magnificence.	Ich hätte doch niemals Onkel Bilbos Geburtstag vergessen? Und wie geht's dem alten Tunichtgut? Wie ich höre, soll es eine ganz besonders prächtige Feier werden.
Frodo	You know Bilbo. He's got the whole place in an uproar.	Du kennst Bilbo doch. Hier sind schon alle gewaltig aus dem Häuschen.
Gandalf	Well, that should please him.	Genau nach seinem Geschmack.
Frodo	Half the Shire's been invited. And the rest of them are turning up anyway.	Er hat das halbe Auenland eingeladen. Und der Rest kommt sowieso.
Bilbo (VO)	And so life in the Shire goes on, very much as it has this past Age, full of its own comings and goings, with change coming slowly. If it comes at all. For things are made to endure in the Shire, passing from one generation to the next. There's always been a Baggins living here under the Hill in Bag End, and there always will be.	Und so geht das Leben im Auenland weiter, ziemlich genauso wie im vergangenen Zeitalter. Es herrscht das übliche Kommen und Gehen. Die Veränderungen finden nur langsam statt, wenn überhaupt. Denn im Auenland schätzt man Dinge, die von Dauer sind. Sie werden von einer Generation an die nächste weitergereicht. Schon immer hat ein Beutlin hier unter dem Berg gelebt, in Beutelsend. Und so wird es auch bleiben.
Frodo	To tell you the truth, Bilbo’s been a bit odd, lately. I mean, more than usual. He's taken to locking himself in his study. He spends hours poring over old maps when he thinks I'm not looking.	Um die Wahrheit zu sagen, Bilbo ist seltsam in letzter Zeit. Ich meine, seltsamer als gewöhnlich. Er schließt sich neuerdings in sein Arbeitszimmer ein. Stundenlang brütet er über alten Landkarten, wenn er glaubt, dass ich nicht hinsehe.

Frodo	He's up to something. All right, then. Keep your secrets.	Irgendwas hat er vor. Na schön. Behalte deine Geheimnisse für dich.
Gandalf	What?	Was?
Frodo	But I know you have something to do with it.	Aber ich weiß, dass du was damit zu tun hast.
Gandalf	Good gracious me.	So, so.
Frodo	Before you came along, we Bagginses were very well thought of.	Bevor du aufgetaucht bist, waren wir Beutlins angesehene Leute.

Bilbo	I had expected you last week. Not that it matters. You come and go as you please. Always have and always will. You caught me a bit unprepared, I'm afraid. We've only got cold chicken and a bit of pickle. There's some cheese here. No, that won't do. We’ve got raspberry jam and apple tart, but not much for afters. Oh no, we’re alright! I've just found some sponge cake. I could make you some eggs if you'd	Ich hatte dich letzte Woche erwartet, aber du kommst ja sowieso, wie es dir passt. ... Ich bin allerdings unvorbereitet. Bilbo	Yes, yes. It's all in hand. All the arrangements are made. Oh, thank you.	Ja, ja. Alles ist bereit. Sämtliche Vorkehrungen sind getroffen. Oh, danke.
Gandalf	Frodo suspects something.	Frodo hat Verdacht geschöpft.
Bilbo	Of course he does. He's a Baggins, not some blockheaded Bracegirdle from Hardbottle.	Natürlich hat er das. Er ist ein Beutlin, keiner von den einfältigen Straffgürtels aus Steinbüttel.
Gandalf	You will tell him, won't you?	Du sagst es ihm doch, oder?
Bilbo	Yes, yes.	Ja, ja.
Gandalf	He's very fond of you.	Er mag dich wirklich sehr.
Bilbo	I know. He’d probably come with me if I asked him. I think in his heart Frodo’s still in love with the Shire. The woods, the fields, little rivers. I am old, Gandalf. I know I don't look it, but I'm beginning to feel it in my heart. I feel thin. Sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread. I need a holiday. A very long holiday. And I don't expect I shall return. In fact, I mean not to.	Ich weiß. Würde ich ihn fragen, käme er wahrscheinlich mit. Ich glaube, tief in seinem Herzen hängt Frodo noch am Auenland. Mit seinen Wäldern und Feldern und kleinen Flüssen. Ich bin alt, Gandalf. Man sieht es mir nicht an, aber im tiefsten Herzensgrund fühle ich es. Frodo	Come on, Sam. Ask Rosie for a dance.	Komm schon, Sam. Frag Rosie, ob sie mit dir tanzt.
Sam	I think I'll just have another ale.	Ich denke, ich wird lieber noch 'n Bier trinken.
Frodo	Oh, no, you don't. Go on!	Oh nein, das wirst du nicht. Geh schon!
Bilbo	So there I was. At the mercy of three monstrous trolls. And they were all arguing amongst themselves, about how they were going to cook us. Whether it be turned on a spit, or to sit on us one by one, squash us into jelly. They spent so much time arguing the whithertos and the whyfors that the sun's first light crept over the top of the trees. Pooh! And turned them all to stone.	Da stand ich nun also, und vor mir drei furchterregender Trolle. Und die stritten sich untereinander, wie sollten sie uns am besten zubereiten? Entweder am Spieß grillen oder sich einfach auf uns draufsetzen und uns zu Sülze zerquetschen. Gandalf	Hold out your hand, Frodo. It’s quite cool. What can you see? Can you see anything?	Strecke deine Hand aus, Frodo. Er ist ganz kühl. Was siehst du? Kannst du irgendwas erkennen?
Frodo	Nothing. There’s nothing. Wait. There are markings. It's some form of Elvish. I can't read it.	Gar nichts. Da ist nichts. Warte. Da sind feine Linien. Es sind Elbische Buchstaben. Ich kann sie nicht lesen.
Gandalf	There are few who can. The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here.	Das können nur wenige. Es ist die Sprache von Mordor, die ich hier nicht aussprechen will.
Frodo	Mordor!	Mordor!
Gandalf	In the Common Tongue it says:	In unsere Sprache übersetzt heiße es:

His fortress at Barad-Dûr is rebuilt in the land of Mordor. Sauron needs only this Ring to cover all the lands in a second darkness. He is seeking it. Seeking it. All his thought is bent on it. For the Ring yearns above all else, to return to the hand of its master. They are one, Frodo, he must never find it.	Nein, Frodo. Der Geist Saurons lebte weiter. Gandalf	There is one other who knew that Bilbo had the Ring. I looked everywhere for the creature Gollum, but the enemy found him first. I don't know how long they tortured him. Sam	I heard raised voices.	Ich habe laute Stimmen gehört.

Saruman	Smoke rises from the Mountain of Doom. The hour grows late and Gandalf the Grey rides to Isengard, seeking my counsel. For that is why you have come, is it not? My old friend. Saruman	You are sure of this?	Bist du dir da sicher?
Gandalf	Beyond any doubt.	Ohne jeden Zweifel.
Saruman	So the Ring of Power has been found.	Dann ist der Ring der Macht gefunden worden.

Da erwartet uns eine stinkende Sumpflandschaft, so weit das Auge reicht.

Boromir	Then you did what I could not. I tried to take the Ring from him.	Dann hast du getan, was ich nicht konnte. Ich versuchte, ihm den Ring wegzunehmen.
Aragorn	The Ring is beyond our reach now.	Der Ring ist für uns jetzt unerreichbar.
Boromir	Forgive me. I did not see it. I have failed you all.	Verzeih mir. Ich konnte es nicht ahnen. Ich habe euch alle verraten.

Gimli	Then it has all been in vain. The Fellowship has failed.	Dann war all das hier umsonst. Die Gemeinschaft hat versagt.
Aragorn	Not if we hold true to each other. We will not abandon Merry and Pippin to torment and death. Not while we have strength left. Leave all that can be spared behind. We travel light.
